The antebellum roots of distinctively black names

This paper explores the existence of distinctively Black names in antebellum era. Building on recent research that documents a national naming pattern for African American males late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (Cook, Logan, Parman, Explorations Economic History 53:64–82, 2014), we analyze three distinct novel data sources uncover stylized facts. First, identified by Cook, Logan Parman using post-Civil War are common among Blacks before Emancipation. Second, these same racially distinctive period. Third, racial distinctiveness increases from 1800s to time Civil War.
